Add a password to your PDF

Encrypt a PDF so only people with the password can open it. Everything happens in your browser — your file and password are never sent anywhere.

Anyone who wants to open this PDF will need to enter this password. There's no way to recover it later, so save it somewhere safe.

How this works

This tool encrypts your PDF with the password you choose, entirely in your browser. The encrypted file requires that password to be opened in any PDF reader — Adobe Acrobat, browser PDF viewers, Preview, and others.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover the password if I forget it?

No. The password isn't stored anywhere by this tool or sent to any server, so there's no way to recover a forgotten password. Keep a copy somewhere safe, like a password manager.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. Encryption happens locally in your browser. Neither your file nor your password ever leaves your device.

Can I remove a password from a PDF I already protected?

An unlock tool for removing existing passwords is on our roadmap. For now, this tool covers adding a new password.
