Why scanners create blank pages in the first place
Most multi-page scanners feed paper through an automatic document feeder, and it's common for the back side of a single-sided page to get scanned anyway if the scanner is set to duplex (double-sided) mode — resulting in an extra blank page for every physical sheet. Separator sheets, cover pages inserted between documents, and occasional feed errors are other common sources of stray blank pages in a scanned batch.
Why this matters beyond just tidiness
- File size — every extra page adds to the file, even a blank one, especially if the scanner saved it at full resolution.
- Page count confusion — if you're citing "see page 12" but blank pages have shifted the numbering, the reference no longer matches.
- Professional appearance — a document submitted with random blank pages looks unfinished, even when the actual content is complete.
How to find the blank pages
For a short document, scrolling through and spotting blanks visually is fastest. For longer scans, a page-by-page thumbnail view — rather than scrolling through full-size pages one at a time — makes blank pages much easier to spot at a glance, since an empty white thumbnail stands out clearly next to pages with visible text or images.
Removing the pages
- Open the scanned PDF in a tool that shows page thumbnails or lets you specify page numbers to delete.
- Identify the blank page numbers (double-check against the thumbnail view rather than assuming a pattern, since not every scan has blanks in a predictable rhythm).
- Remove those specific pages.
- Save the cleaned document and do a final scroll-through to confirm nothing was missed or removed by mistake.
Preventing the problem at the source
If you scan documents regularly, checking your scanner's duplex setting before starting a batch — switching to single-sided (simplex) mode for single-sided originals — avoids creating blank back-side pages in the first place, saving the cleanup step entirely for future scans.
What if the "blank" page isn't actually blank?
Occasionally a page that looks blank actually has very light content — a faint stamp, a watermark, or text scanned at very low contrast. Zoom in before deleting anything you're not fully sure about, particularly for legal or official documents where an apparently blank page might carry a signature line or notarization mark.
Clean up your scan
The PDFGuy Delete Pages tool removes specific pages by number or range, and the Organize PDF tool shows every page as a thumbnail so you can visually spot and remove blank pages without guessing at page numbers — both processed entirely in your browser.
